SKIRT

With larger needles, cast on 186 sts and join for working in the round. Work 3 rounds in garter stitch (= purl one row, knit one row and purl one row). Then begin knitting as charted  (=31 chart repeats per round). When piece measures approx. 7 cm, decrease every second purl-3 group to a purl-2 group, i.e., p2tog, p1. Continue as charted (notice that every other repeat only has two purl sts now!). When piece measures approx. 12 cm, decrease the other p3 groups to p2 groups as you did before = 155 sts. Continue knitting as charted.

When piece measures approx. 21 cm (and the next round is a yo-decrease-yo round), do not make the yarn overs (= 2 sts will be decreased every chart repeat). Notice! Distributed evenly over the same round, substitute three ordinary decreases (= slip1 knitwise, k1, psso) for three double decreases (= 1 st less will be decreased in those chart repeats).

Knit 8 rows garter sts over the remaining 96 st. Then separate half of the sts (= 48 sts) for the back and put them on waste yarn or a stitch holder for later use.

FRONT PIECE

The front is knit flat and the first row is a right side row.

First row: bind off 4 sts for armhole, work 6 sts garter, p2, k3, p2, k14, p2, k3, p2 and work garter st to end of row.

Second row: BO 4 sts for the other armhole, work 6 sts garter, k2, p3, k2, p14, k2, p3, k2 and work garter to the end.

Following rows: decrease one st at both sides three times (= 6 sts decreased) for armhole shaping. There will be 3 garter sts left over for selvage on both sides. Knit as charted with p2 k3 p2 groups on both sides inside of garter-st edges and work stockinette over the 14 sts in the middle.

When piece measures 6.5 cm from the beginning of armholes, leave the middle 10 sts on a stitch holder or waste yarn and knit the first side of neck.

Left side: decrease one st at beginning of every RS row twice for neck shaping. Continue until piece measures 11.5 cm from armholes. BO all sts.

Right side: decrease one st at end of every RS row twice for neck shaping. Continue until piece measures 11.5 cm from armholes, ending with a WS row. Then work a buttonhole band: work two rows stockinette st. On next row work two buttonholes (= k2tog, yo) evenly across the row. Work another two rows in stockinette st and BO all sts purlwise.

BACK PIECE

Shape armhole as for front and work 3 selvage stitches in garter at both sides. The other sts are knitted in stockinette. When piece measures 9 cm, leave the 10 middle sts on a holder or waste yarn and knit first side of neck.

Left side: decrease one st at beginning of every RS row twice and continue until piece measures 11.5 cm. BO all sts.

Right side: decrease one st at end of every RS row twice and continue until piece measures 11.5 cm, BO all sts.

Finishing:

Sew shoulder seam. With smaller needles, pick up a suitable number of sts along the button band edge, the front and back edges and also take the sts from stitch holders or waste yarns. Work two or three rows of garter st and BO. Sew buttons on appropriate places on back piece and weave in yarn ends. Block if desired and hope that the garment will fit her new owner perfectly!
